{"id":23163,"date":"2022-10-11T15:11:05","date_gmt":"2022-10-11T15:11:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/?p=23163"},"modified":"2025-11-04T04:37:35","modified_gmt":"2025-11-04T09:37:35","slug":"ofsted-inspection-framework-inspection-process","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en-gb\/resources\/blog-posts\/ofsted-inspection-framework-inspection-process\/","title":{"rendered":"The Ofsted Inspection Process"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/inspecting-schools-guide-for-maintained-and-academy-schools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ofsted inspection process<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can unfold in a couple of ways but inspectors must uphold certain <\/span>rules and requirements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that schools should be aware of, as well as be informed of what might be expected of them before or during an inspection.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How often does a school get an Ofsted inspection?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In all cases, Ofsted inspection can take place at any point from five school days after the first day students attend in the autumn term. The <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/inspecting-schools-guide-for-maintained-and-academy-schools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ofsted inspection cycle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of schools is usually four years, but a lot can depend on the type of institution and the previous grading the school received.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Ofsted inspection of new schools<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New schools are inspected in the first 3 years after they open, normally in the third year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Schools judged \u201cgood\u201d or \u201coutstanding\u201d: Section 8 inspection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A school previously judged as \u201cgood\u201d or \u201coutstanding\u201d will be inspected every four years \u2014 this is called a<\/span><b> section 8 inspection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where inspectors don\u2019t give graded judgements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>Schools judged \u201cgood\u201d or \u201coutstanding\u201d: Section 5 inspection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A section 8 inspection can turn into a <\/span><b>section 5 inspection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, usually within one to two years but sometimes immediately, if Ofsted inspectors find the standards to be better than they were or the opposite, declining. In this case, they carry out a full inspection with graded judgements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Outstanding schools that were exempt from routine inspections<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintained primary and secondary schools and academies formerly judged as outstanding at their latest section 5 inspection were exempt from Ofsted\u2019s routine inspections until 13 November 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Following this date, all these schools must have an inspection before 1 August 2026:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schools that were last inspected under section 5 before September 2015, will receive an initial section 5 inspection<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schools that were last inspected under section 5 after September 2015, will receive an initial section 8 inspection<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Schools judged \u201crequires improvement\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A school that received a \u201crequires improvement\u201d rating at its last inspection will be inspected again, under section 5, within a period of 30 months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Schools judged \u2018inadequate\u2019\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a school is judged as \u201cinadequate\u201d, it is placed in a category of concern and will become a sponsored (underperforming) academy by the order of the Secretary of State of Education. After this, Ofsted will usually not monitor the school anymore unless there are safeguarding concerns or delays with the school-to-academy transition.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schools can defer or cancel an Ofsted inspection but only in exceptional circumstances, for example, if a headteacher or a member of the senior management team is subject to a police investigation, the provider had a recent major accident such as serious injury of a student or staff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/deferring-ofsted-inspections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deferring Ofsted inspections<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Before the inspection\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ofsted will notify parents of students in a letter\/ email about the upcoming inspection, explaining their options to share their views. Parents can do this on the <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/parentview.ofsted.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ofsted Parent View<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> site, not just on the occasion of an inspection but any time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schools also have to gather documents and all related information for Ofsted before the on-site inspection starts. They will have to use <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/portal.ofsted.gov.uk\/my.policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ofsted\u2019s provider portal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to upload and share some of these items. Ofsted shares the username and password with each school for log-in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schools are also asked beforehand to notify other related parties that take part in the provision of students.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Notice of inspection\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ofsted normally notifies schools of its inspection between 10.30 AM and 2 PM on the school day before the start of inspection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/section-8-school-inspection-handbook-eif\/school-inspection-handbook-section-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a section 8 inspection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the lead inspector will give an initial phone call to the headteacher or a senior member of the staff in the absence of the headteacher, where the inspector will:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confirm the date of the inspection<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explain the purpose of the inspection<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confirm that the school will inform the governing body and the local authority\/proprietor\/trust (as relevant) and that the lead inspector will wish to speak to them during the inspection<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide the opportunity to discuss any specific issues that the lead inspector should be made aware of before arriving to start the monitoring inspection the next day<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discuss how aspects of the quality of education are improving<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agree on the approach to inspecting activities testing leaders\u2019 assertions, e.g., talking to pupils, meeting with staff, lesson visits, etc., and activities linked to other areas for improvement the school has been working on, such as attendance or behaviour<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/730127\/School_inspection_handbook_section_5_270718.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">handbook for section 5 inspections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> describe the same or similar subjects that can be discussed during an initial Ofsted inspection call, and a couple of additional thoughts such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making the school aware of its duty to inform parents about the inspections<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Establishing if the school has a special educational needs resource base<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Establishing if any students attend off-site alternative provision, full-time or part-time and discussing if any off-site units cater for students with behaviour or attendance difficulties<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discussing the governance structure of the school<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>Can Ofsted give your school an inspection without notice?<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, Ofsted can inspect a school without any notice in which case the inspector will call the school about 15 minutes before arriving.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>How many Ofsted inspectors can a school expect?<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The number of inspectors will depend on the size and nature of the school.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> During the inspection<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An inspection normally takes up two full days but for primary schools previously judged \u201cgood\u201d and maintained nursery schools with a \u201cgood\u201d or \u201coutstanding\u201d grade given formerly can usually expect a one-day inspection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens during an inspection?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspectors spend most of their time observing lessons and gathering evidence to inform their judgements<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspectors will talk to students and staff, also considering external views of the school\u2019s performance (by a local authority, for instance)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lead inspector will sit down with the headteacher several times throughout the inspection to ensure that they and the staff are up-to-date on the inspection process\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspectors will invite the headteacher, curriculum and other leaders to visit lessons<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspectors will ask the headteacher to attend the final meeting at the end of the inspection<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspectors will share oral feedback about their findings to teachers and staff<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>What happens at the final feedback meeting during an inspection?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The inspectors will explain the grades given to the school for each <\/span>Ofsted judgement category<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and that these are up for provision and may be changed \u201cfollowing quality assurance procedures and should remain confidential\u201d. The main feedback points will be included in the written inspection report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspectors will talk about the complaints procedure and if a school is judged as \u201crequires improvement\u201d or is being placed in special measures, or signalled to have serious weaknesses, here they will learn about the further implications and consequences of the judgement.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> After the inspection\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ofsted inspectors will write a report with the inspection findings and send the draft for a \u201cfactual accuracy check\u201d to schools usually within 18 working days after the inspection. They have the option to comment on it within 5 working days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An electronic version of the final report will usually be sent to schools within 30 working days after the inspection and in most cases, it will be published on the <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/reports.ofsted.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ofsted reports website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well within 38 working days after the end of the inspection.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Ofsted will send a copy of the inspection report to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The school\u2019s headteacher<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The local authority<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The appropriate authority or proprietor (for example, the governing body or the academy trust where the local authority is not the appropriate authority)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The person or body responsible for appointing foundation governors if the school has them (including diocesan or other appropriate authorities in the case of schools with a religious character)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other prescribed persons such as the Department for Education or the Education and Skills Funding Agency<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s the schools\u2019 responsibility to provide a copy of the report to students\u2019 parents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/inspecting-schools-guide-for-maintained-and-academy-schools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ofsted, Inspecting schools: guide for maintained and academy schools<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the inspection, Ofsted also invites related parties to fill out an online inspection survey, sharing their views on the inspection process.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An Ofsted inspection process can unfold in a couple of ways but inspectors must uphold certain rules and requirements that schools should be aware of, as well as be informed of what might be expected of them before or during an inspection.
