They do this through an online system on the UCAS website, called <\/span><b>UCAS Hub<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The UCAS application form covers:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">personal details<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the courses the students is interested in taking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">education and employment history<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a personal statement<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a written reference<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The student\u2019s personal details include basic information, such as their name and address, but also items such as their fee payers and any support arrangements they may need.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They then register their interest in the courses they would like to take, and the chosen university they want to go to. They have up to five choices\u2014a firm option (i.e. their first choice) and insurance options (back-up choices).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the education section, the student can document their academic achievements, including details of GCSEs and A Level grades or vocational qualifications, as well as other relevant work such as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/qips.ucas.com\/qip\/extended-project-qualification-epq\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They can also make a note of any paid work they have completed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The personal statement is an opportunity for the student to talk about who they are, why they want to take a particular course, and any relevant skills and experience they have.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_row et_pb_row_2 et_pb_row_1-4_1-2_1-4\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_column et_pb_column_1_2 et_pb_column_7 et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_2 et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<h3><strong>What is the UCAS reference?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UCAS reference is a statement about the student written by an appropriate referee, such as a tutor, head of year, or headteacher. This person should be well-informed about the student and capable of explaining what makes them suitable for higher education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucas.com\/undergraduate\/applying-university\/how-get-ucas-undergraduate-reference\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reference can be up to 4,000 characters or 47 lines long<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whichever comes first. The content of the reference varies widely depending on the student\u2019s background and the course they are looking to study. However, most UCAS references include records of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the student\u2019s academic performance and achievements<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their suitability for the subject area(s) they have chosen<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the student\u2019s academic potential, strengths, and ambitions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relevant activities and work experience the student has completed, both in relation to their chosen subject(s) and higher education more generally<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anything that may have affected or might affect their academic performance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the student\u2019s predicted grades and exam results<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reference is designed to support the rest of the student\u2019s UCAS application. It should corroborate and develop the information provided elsewhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How can I support students by writing a UCAS reference?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UCAS reference is closely linked to each student\u2019s personal statement. These pieces should be able to work alongside one another without going over the same points, so you should start by reading the personal statement carefully. Also, the same reference is sent to each institution, so you should not mention specific universities. It\u2019s a good idea to talk to your students about the references before you write them, as well. You might discuss:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">things to include in your reference that could help your students to be accepted onto their chosen course<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anything there isn\u2019t room for in their personal statement<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">things you might not necessarily be aware of, such as extenuating circumstances<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UCAS reference should meet certain criteria in order to appeal to admissions staff and provide a useful and accurate impression of each student. It should be tailored to offer a holistic view of the student and distinguish them from their peers. It ought to focus on their strengths, provide specific examples to back up points, and expand upon the traits that make them suitable for a particular course.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UCAS recommendations for references can be found on their website and offer suggestions and tips, especially for references that are being provided for students applying for professional courses,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucas.com\/advisers\/references\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as teaching and nursing programmes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Make a note of UCAS deadlines<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to be aware of UCAS application deadlines, too.
