The report states a number of key findings, including that \u2018[b]eing \u201cwork ready\u201d remains a priority, with two in five (40%) reporting that they are dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with wider character, behaviours, and attributes\u2019 of school leavers entering the workforce. The same report also found that \u2018[o]ne third (33%) are either dissatisfied or very dissatisfied by the amount of relevant work experience young people have\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/forbestechcouncil\/2020\/01\/06\/work-based-learning-why-you-have-to-get-with-the-program\/#53637d3035b6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work-related learning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be one of the key factors for helping students choose and prepare for a career that fits them, and it is essential to developing the skills we all need in today\u2019s workforce.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What Is Work-related Learning?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any instructional strategies or programs that serve to connect the classroom and the workplace can be considered work-related learning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It could be as structured as an apprenticeship or internship programme, or as easy to implement as a classroom-assigned research project that requires students to learn from someone in the working world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) highlights 3 ways of defining work-based learning in the report<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/officialdocuments\/publicdisplaydocumentpdf\/?cote=DELSA\/ELSA\/WD\/SEM(2019)12&amp;docLanguage=En\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improving Work-based Learning in Schools<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WRL outside of any school programme<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">School-mediated WRL within the context of general education upper secondary programmes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">School-mediated WRL within the context of vocational upper secondary programmes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Most secondary schools in the UK facilitate some form of work-related learning for their students to address the Gatsby Benchmarks and prepare students for real-world careers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Department for Education\u2019s report<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/601373\/Work_experience_and_related_activities_in_schools_and_colleges.pdf\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work experience and related activities in schools and colleges<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work experience is considered a key component of study programmes for all young people aged 16-19 years old, and the finding was that \u2018the majority of schools and colleges offered work experience placements to all students (just 11 per cent of placement for years 10-11 and 23 per cent for years 12-13 were not open to all).\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why Is Work-related Learning Important to UK Education?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The future of work is more undefined than ever before. It seems that the world, the economy, and the marketplace are changing almost minute to minute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advances in technology and the rise of artificial intelligence are creating career opportunities that we couldn\u2019t have imagined even a few years ago. Our ever-evolving world, including a global pandemic and a long-overdue focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion, are even changing the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">way<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> people work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Static information about careers is no longer relevant or helpful for the next generation of employees and entrepreneurs. Accustomed to unprecedented access to the world thanks to technology, today\u2019s youth are most engaged in their education when they understand how it connects to their future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/one.oecd.org\/document\/DELSA\/ELSA\/WD\/SEM(2019)12\/En\/pdf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OECD\u2019s report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stated that UK schools and colleges both recognise the importance of work-related activities but that the primary benefits of each differed by institution. Schools considered the primary benefit of work experience to be \u2018understanding the world of work\u2019, while colleges \u2018placed more value on an increase in students\u2019 wider employability skills\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How To Incorporate Work-related Learning Activities and Assignments Into Your School\u2019s Careers Programme<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ideas include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Building connections with employers in the community:<\/strong> For a more personal approach, careers professionals or work experience coordinators can develop relationships with a diverse range of employers and professionals, and invite them to share their experiences and wisdom. These connections can be leveraged for activities like career fairs, field trips, guest lecturers, and job shadowing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">M<strong>entorships:<\/strong> Encourage and support students to identify and approach a mentor who works in the field they are considering. Coach them on how to set up meetings so they can ask questions and learn about the work they do.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Real-world and\/or social entrepreneurship:<\/strong> For students interested in running their own business, a culminating project for an appropriate A Level class could be to launch a business or social initiative.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Design projects and activities that help develop employability skills:<\/strong> Students in secondary school can begin to work on projects or assignments that increase awareness of career exploration and future readiness.
