In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fenews.co.uk\/education\/35-of-students-reveal-that-the-pandemic-has-influenced-or-changed-their-future-career-plans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recent article published by FE News<\/a>, 35% of students surveyed said the pandemic has influenced or changed their future careers options, with 50% of those impacted revealing they have changed the sector they want to work in.<\/p>\n<p>With students\u2019 post-16 and post-18 pathways in a state of flux, ensuring students receive the most meaningful work experience, during their tenure at school, is now more important than ever to help them explore and plan for their future success.<\/p>\n<h2>What is work experience?<\/h2>\n<p>Whether you are new to arranging work experience or looking for fresh ideas, let\u2019s pause a moment and reflect on what it\u2019s all about.<\/p>\n<p>Work experience is the time spent in a workplace environment learning about a job role, a company, or an industry. There are many different kinds of work experience, such as job shadows, internships and mock interviews.<\/p>\n<p>Each work experience placement presents different challenges. These help students build their skills and knowledge, and ultimately decide what pathway to pursue.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you\u2019re organising now or want to get ahead on early summer work experience opportunities for your students, here are four suggestions to help you plan.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>1. Identify good work experience opportunities<\/h3>\n<p>Work experience may be the first chance your students have to immerse themselves in day-to-day workplace practices. Maximise this experience by first delving into your students\u2019 skills and interests. By focusing on what they like and don\u2019t like, you\u2019ll gain a stronger sense of what work experience opportunities might be the best fit.<\/p>\n<p>When considering what passes as\u00a0<i>good\u00a0<\/i>work experience, think about these things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Choose an environment within a sector that interest your students<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Make sure the student will be subjected to first-hand learning and practical hands-on experience as this will give them a sense of achievement<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">And work with your students to help them develop a clear understanding of their soft skills. These could be reflection activities after the placement to help them assess how they feel about the work experience and whether their aspirations have changed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>2. Consider the Gatsby Benchmarks and how you will track your students\u2019 experiences<\/h3>\n<p>Although non-statutory, all schools and colleges are expected to use the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatsby.org.uk\/uploads\/education\/gatsby-careers-4-pager-updated.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Gatsby Benchmarks<\/a>\u00a0to develop a careers programme for students.<\/p>\n<p>By arranging work experience opportunities for your students, you are on your way to achieving:\u00a0<b>Benchmark 5<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 encounters with employers and employees;\u00a0<b>Benchmark 6<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 experiences of workplaces! You will need to consider the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Risk assessments \u2013 satisfy yourself that the employer has carried out a suitable risk assessment procedure.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Employer\u2019s liability insurance \u2013 ask for a copy or the section relating to young people under 18.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Disclosure and Barring Service \u2013 if necessary, conduct checks on applicable staff.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>4. Stay organised<\/h3>\n<p>Ultimately, organising work experience is a challenging administrative task. So, tackle it with to-do lists, planning documents, or checklists \u2013 whatever helps you stay organised.
