Although there is no one right answer, preparing students to eventually find their place in the workforce would surely be on the list.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to help students find their place in the workforce, many states have mandated Individualized Learning Plans (ILPs).<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our third roundtable, which took place on <strong>April 30<\/strong>, educators discussed ILPs and how they are being impacted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en\/remote-learning-district-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">transition to distance learning<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/xello.zoom.us\/webinar\/register\/WN_OFTwGpKUQXmj3QAUsncefw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Watch Webinar: Creating an Individualized Learning Plan During a Disruption<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The roundtable included three fantastic panelists (details below):<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Dr. Scott V. Solberg, <\/strong>Professor at the Boston University Wheelock College of Education and Human Development. Dr. Solberg is working internationally and nationally on the design, implementation, and evaluation of effective career development programs for youth, including youth with disabilities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Katie Siewert, <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assistant Director of CTE at Vancouver School District. Katie oversees the areas of Career Guidance, Work-Based Learning, Medical Arts, Family and Consumer Sciences, and Language Translation and Interpretation.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Onna Holland, <\/strong>School Counseling Fellow at the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE).\u00a0 In her work at RIDE, Onna is leading the implementation of ILP programs for the state. She is a middle school counselor and past president of the Rhode Island School Counselor Association.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below are the questions and key takeaways from the panelists.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What is the concept of an individualized or personalized learning plan and why does it matter for students?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To make certain everyone was on the same page, the first question revolved around defining terminology. What exactly is an ILP?<\/span><br \/>\nFirst off, as Solberg notes, the phrase &#8220;ILP&#8221; is not used exclusively, yet the basic concepts are universal. An ILP is a student directed plan which is reviewed annually.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Siewert emphasizes that students need direction and that&#8217;s where an ILP comes in.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It\u2019s critical that students have knowledge about themselves including their career plans, what they\u2019re good at, what they\u2019re interested in, and why it matters.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This culminates with students being ready for their next step after high school.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal of an ILP is to align classes and learning opportunities to help students broaden their perspective and prepare them to reach their goals.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nILPs are effective when using career planning software, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Xello.<\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tools such as Xello provide a scope and sequence as well as classroom activities which help students better understand themselves and where they might fit in the working world.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a student has a sense of direction, it leads to more purpose. So, an ILP is not only about preparing a student for the workplace but encouraging them by showing them their path.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How are you handling ILPs during this time? How have you seen other parts of the country manage these requirements?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While school is taking place under different circumstances, it doesn\u2019t mean federal and state requirements have changed.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Siewert notes that in Washington State, requirements related to the ILP remain in place. Requirements in Rhode Island also remain in place according to Holland. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the state plans on rolling out a new framework and scope and sequence related to the ILP for the 2020-2021 school year. In order for the rollout to be successful, some schools are piloting the program this year. \u201cThey are continuing to do that [piloting the new program] by making sure certain components are still happening,\u201d says Holland.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the fixed requirements, the changed situation demands understanding. \u201cNow they are trying to have a flexible approach, and focus on what is really important for students,\u201d says Holland.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new way of handling ILPs has resulted in positive outcomes according to Solberg.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Counselors are seeing families more involved and engaged in the process [of ILPs].<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also provides an opportunity to reimagine the school curriculum. It gives students a chance to create an \u201conline presence\u201d where they take more responsibility.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, while ILPs and state requirements continue to be enforced, the changed circumstances due to COVID-19 demand flexibility and offer an opportunity to improve the existing approach.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>With a lot of districts now shut down and relaxation on testing and mandate requirements, why should districts continue on the path for ILPs? What value do they add in times like these?<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety, stress, and mental health struggles are on the rise due to the pandemic. So, wouldn\u2019t it be better to simply relax the ILP standards and focus on getting through the challenge? To answer this, we can seek inspiration from the immortal words of Fleetwood Mac, \u201cDon\u2019t stop thinking about tomorrow.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFuture planning is a nice reprieve from everything that is going on,\u201d says Holland. \u201cIt provides hope.\u201d <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solberg concurs and adds that ILPs help to reinforce students&#8217; talents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The ILP is a fun non-graded activity that can take students\u2019 minds off all the pressures going on.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the ILP should go on, Holland advises a flexible approach. \u201cWe\u2019ve adjusted how we are doing things and focusing more on some things versus others.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if students want to take a break from ILPs, they would be doing themselves a disservice. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is an opportunity for seniors to learn how to advocate for themselves,\u201d says Siewert. \u201cThis is particularly important amid their world turning upside down.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many students, the ILP lets them know that \u201cschool is more than just the credits needed to graduate,\u201d says Siewert.\u00a0 <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Continuing with the ILP allows students [to] take a step back from academics and continue to support themselves and their journey and plans after high school.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, continuing the ILP can encourage students to plan for their futures and become future ready.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What benefit can technology bring to the ILP experience, especially during school disruptions?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One might think that everyone has a computer and internet access. However, according to a June 2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsday.com\/business\/technology\/internet-schools-homework-computer-1.32096937\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the Associated Press, nearly three million students do not have access to the internet in their homes.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technology is critical to the ILP experience. Solberg states that it&#8217;s impossible to do ILP\u2019s without technology. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>No school counselor can know every pathway. The technology gives us the information.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, he sees educators\u2019 jobs as growing students\u2019 competence with technology so they can navigate systems as they get excited about new things related to ILPs.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Rhode Island, the ILP portfolio needs to be completed online. With everything stored online, students can easily move on to next step and plan out their paths more efficiently.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/xello.zoom.us\/webinar\/register\/WN_OFTwGpKUQXmj3QAUsncefw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Watch Webinar: What is an Individualized Learning Plan &amp; How to Create ILPs During a Disruption<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also serves to connect student, family, and school. Finally, it leads to activities that are more engaging.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Holland adds that districts that are 1:1 have made a smoother transition to distance learning.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Siewert agrees. In her district all the Middle Schools and High Schools are 1:1 which has been critical in helping them transfer to remote learning including their High School and Beyond program which was integrated through Xello\u2019s online platform.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technology and access to the internet are essential for students as they work on their ILP and the need does not end when they go back to the school setting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Are there specific tools, resources or practices you can recommend to keep students engaged and on track with ILPs during this time?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ever try to keep a class full of teenagers engaged? Now, imagine trying to do it when students are in remote locations.\u00a0 The panel had a number of suggestions that can help teachers and counselors increase engagement:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/info.flipgrid.com\/\">Flipgrid:<\/a> allows students to make videos.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.screencastify.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Screen Castify<\/span><\/a>:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> allows users to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">record, edit, and share videos.<\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.polleverywhere.com\/?ref=PIW0qgbZ&amp;campaignid=1624296850&amp;adgroupid=63462208002&amp;keyword=poll%20everywhere&amp;matchtype=e&amp;device=c&amp;keywordid=kwd-304786950627&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwncT1BRDhARIsAOQF9LlqCHOP38zlg6v_AH5hu26LNPkcDGIi7PNaTdII04TobkR91KnhLacaAp7SEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poll Everywhere<\/span><\/a>:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> enables people to host interactive remote meetings and capture feedback instantly during those meetings.<\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.remind.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remind<\/span><\/a>:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> send reminders via text. Holland says students are more apt to respond to a text than email.<\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nepris.com\/home\/v4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nepris<\/span><\/a>:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helps<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> teachers recruit and plan for guest speakers by facilitating virtual connections. Solberg notes that he knows of schools that are creating opportunities for virtual job shadowing.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In addition, there are virtual college tours that include a college admission officer interacting with students.<\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/cehs.csuohio.edu\/mmfw\/making-my-future-work-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making my Future Work<\/span><\/a>:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has 500 pages of lessons that align with ILPs &amp; can be transfered into a Word document.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As educators strive to engage students, they face significant challenges. The tools noted above can help.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Do you have any final advice or key learnings you\u2019d like to share?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Siewert suggested looking for a silver lining in the crisis. Schools can think about how they can do things differently. She also advised educators to do the best they can and not get down on themselves. They should apply that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">same grace and flexibility to their students.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Holland has also seen silver linings. In addition to being amazed at how rapidly schools shifted online, she has been astonished at the creativity that it has brought out. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The shift has helped uncover things that can be done better even when schools return to the classroom.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solberg encourages schools to step back and look at the big picture. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That picture should include a school counselor as part of the leadership team. This can help to increase the visibility of and buy-in of the scope and sequence related to the ILPs.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An ILP helps students envision their future. That eye on the future is even more critical during these challenging times. In the current situation, it may be a challenge to keep students focused on their ILPs. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the process probably does not match what was drawn up back in September and the progress may be less than hoped for, it\u2019s worthwhile to push on.
