In addition to college degrees and specialized skills, employers are increasingly seeking \u201creal world\u201d skills like critical-thinking, creativity, and collaboration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis skill set is critical for\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0people who hope to participate productively in the workforce.\u00a0Students need the full complement of skills in order to participate meaningfully in our digital world rather than being steamrolled by it,\u201d says <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/barbarakurshan\/2017\/07\/18\/teaching-21st-century-skills-for-21st-century-success-requires-an-ecosystem-approach\/#76fb5d2f3fe6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">education consultant Dr. Barbara Kurshan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, many students are not quite living up to employer expectations. For example, according to a survey from the <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aacu.org\/newsroom\/national-survey-finds-employer-confidence-in-higher-education-remains-high-despite-perceived-shortfalls-in-the-preparedness-of-recent-graduates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Association of American College and Universities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, oral communication is viewed by most employers (64%) as a very important skill for new hires to possess, yet roughly half as many employers (34%) agree that recent college graduates are well prepared in this area.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even worse, in a survey, 40% of business leaders told education magazine <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.intelligent.com\/4-in-10-business-leaders-say-recent-college-grads-are-unprepared-to-enter-workforce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intelligent.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that they believe recent college grads (2020-2023) are unprepared for the workforce, citing work ethic and communication skills as top reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"skills\"><b>What Are the Most Coveted Skills of the Future?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a sweeping <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/conorneill.com\/2021\/12\/30\/the-54-skills-vital-to-the-future-of-work-mckinsey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McKinsey report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the 54 \u201cdistinct areas of talent\u201d can be grouped into four categories and most are considered 21<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century skills:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cognitive:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Problem solving, planning, structured communications, mental flexibility<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Interpersonal:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Influence, relationships, teamwork<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Self-leadership:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Self-awareness, goal setting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Digital:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Data literacy, computational thinking<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study predicted that, by 2030, there will be a <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2018\/06\/the-3-skill-sets-workers-need-to-develop-between-now-and-2030\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dramatic increase in demand for<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Higher cognitive skills, such as advanced literacy and writing, critical thinking and complex information processing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skills in advanced communication and negotiation, empathy, adaptability.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technological skills for data analysis, engineering, and research.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en\/future-ready-careers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong><span style=\"color: #006fba;\">Read the White Paper: Future-Ready Careers &#8211; It All Starts with Technology\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3 id=\"need\"><b>Students Are Asking for Real World Skills, Too<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students are becoming increasingly discouraged by what they perceive is a disconnect between what they learn in school and real life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Many kids are more engaged in learning when they can see how and where they\u2019ll apply it.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A report for the <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.gatesfoundation.org\/Documents\/TheSilentEpidemic3-06FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that half of a group of high school dropouts surveyed blamed uninteresting classes as a major factor for their decision to discontinue school. Four out of five said they wished they had more opportunity to do real-world learning.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Many students feel under-prepared and lack persistence. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many students struggle with the transition to post-secondary education because they <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/helenleebouygues\/2022\/08\/17\/critical-skills-not-emphasized-by-most-middle-school-teachers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">haven\u2019t built the skills to think critically<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Students need tools to successfully manage change. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When students are encouraged to build skills like problem-solving, planning, and communication, they are better prepared to navigate change. Change management is one of the single hardest things for anyone to tackle. The more experience they have making healthy transitions, the more resilient and confidently they can do it.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These 21st century skills are not necessarily found in most traditional curriculum. National mandates and state-specific college and career readiness standards, have the right idea to help district leaders make students future ready. With that in mind, the earlier educators introduce 21<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century concepts, the better.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-regulatory skills like self-assessment, collaboration, and reflection can be incorporated in just about any subject in the current curriculum. Educators can work to help students build the skills required for life-long learning and inquiry, including flexibility, planning, and problem-solving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An online future readiness program with age-appropriate lessons helps take the guesswork out of instilling these skills in elementary school students. Ed:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Offer leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork opportunities through sport and physical games and activities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approaching 21<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century skills in an integrated way instead of something \u201cextra\u201d that must be added to a select number of subjects is key to success. By taking a whole-school approach to skill-building it becomes a shared responsibility and students benefit from consistency and continuity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>4. Encourage a Collaborative Learning Environment<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today\u2019s workplaces are hives of collaboration and communication. Set students\u2019 expectations for the real world by encouraging them to apply what they\u2019ve learned in other situations and through group-based learning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collaborative learning helps reinforce and solidify many core 21st century skills employers look for, including creativity, problem-solving, critical thinking, communication, and interpersonal relationship building. Students can test some of the key capabilities they may have learned through independent work in real life role-play scenarios or project-based learning to see how the concepts come to life. They can also test drive new concepts in this way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/leadership\/children-must-be-taught-to-collaborate-studies-say\/2017\/05\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies have demonstrated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the value of collaboration alone as an employable skill, and one that helps foster other professional skills in demand today.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Classroom simulations, explorations, and curriculum that present real world concerns, such as career back-up plans, job interviews, career demand, lifestyle costs and work\/life balance will help students understand some of the factors underlying every career choice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>5. Make Learning Real-World Relevant<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many students fail to give much thought to their futures until they reach their final years of high school. Then there\u2019s often confusion and panic to consider and explore the reasonable options available to them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Educators can help students avoid this mad scramble by giving them concrete examples of how certain skills and concepts will be applied in the \u201creal\u201d world. We\u2019ve often heard students complain that they\u2019ll never \u201cuse\u201d trigonometry or chemistry in real life, so what\u2019s the point? It is becoming increasingly incumbent on teachers to share with them \u201cthe point.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Particularly with respect to soft skills, which are often less identifiable, it\u2019s important to reference career profiles that point out when and how communication, collaboration, creativity and critical-thinking skills are important to excel in careers and in life as an adult.
