While Xello research shows that processes and learning usually take longer in the special education world, Matthew Hines fully believes that \u201cstudents with intellectual disabilities still have a great capacity to be successful with the right support in place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Accessibility Compounds Impact<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u201cIn special education, students already take more time on average to complete things. When something\u2019s not accessible, a student, teacher, and family have to engage on that accessibility, putting the student even more behind. And if you imagine that happening not just one instance, but several instances throughout a student\u2019s experience in the public school system\u2026there\u2019s a lot of delay and backsliding with their learning.\u201d -Matthew Hines<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The solution is to research and invest in accessible resources to engage and <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en\/blog\/student-engagement\/equity-in-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meet the needs of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> students<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help them build future readiness skills and plan for a successful future.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choosing the Right Software<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When most people think of accessibility tools for technology, they think of overlay tools that claim to detect and fix web accessibility issues. The problem, says Hines, is that \u201cthey are cheap and quick to fix some issues, but are not a long term solution to improve foundational accessibility issues.\u201d Moreover, many of these tools can\u2019t meet everyone\u2019s needs, so even if software is still 90% accessible, Hines notes \u201cthat\u2019s not really a true sense of accessibility.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luckily, Maureen Ariza Paredes says, Xello knew that overlays were never the solution. Instead, she reveals that \u201cXello set out to <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/help.xello.world\/en-us\/Content\/Knowledge-Base\/KB\/Accessibility.htm?Highlight=accessibility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meet WCAG <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Accessibility Standards) from day one,\u201d including color contrasts, screen readers, and translations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That translation piece is very important to Melissa Gillard, whose district is comprised of 30% of English Language Learners. She looks for software that helps increase student engagement \u2013 especially in the future readiness process \u2013 for all kids and \u201cin a language that they feel most comfortable.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gillard recommends for educators to look \u201cat programs that are not intimidating for kids to engage in\u201d to help foster an <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en\/blog\/student-engagement\/accessibility-in-the-classroom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inclusive learning culture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She speaks of her own district&#8217;s students using Xello: <strong>\u201cThey see themselves in it; they can access it without a lot of support and guidance from the adult in the classroom.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promoting All Pathways<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ariza Paredes explains that there\u2019s \u201chard accessibility\u201d \u2013\u00a0 usability features such as<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> incorporating white on dark colors for students that are color blind, or using deeply saturated colors on white <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">f<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or students who are visually impaired and need a screen reader, or ensuring closed captioning on videos or audio resources for students who are hard of hearing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nd \u201csoft accessibility\u201d \u2013 such as equal billing for all post secondary pathways. She says that \u201cwhether kids are thinking about going to work in the military, to enter a community living space, or entrepreneurship, these and many other pathways are given equal importance to what would be the traditional college pathway.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promoting all pathways is incredibly important for Gillard, who always chooses resources that reflect the population she serves.
