However, before any individual can set a goal and carve out a plan to reach that goal, they need to consider what it is they are aiming for.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motivation to follow the plan and reach one\u2019s goals will only follow if one is genuinely interested in the outcome.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This mindset is the reasoning behind the Individual Learning Plan (ILP), an educational tool used\u00a0 by 43 states. So, what is an ILP and how does it help put students on the path towards success? Let\u2019s take a look.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"define\"><strong>Definition and reasons to use an Individual Learning Plan (ILP)\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a Gallup Poll conducted by the <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/monitor\/2015\/06\/grabbing-students\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Psychological Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (APA), 28% of students are not engaged in school and 19% are actively disengaged in school.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the APA article, students are disengaged because they believe what is being taught in school has no relevance to the real world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The article further states that \u201cstudents are more likely to be fully engaged in school if they expect they can do well and if they value the learning that schools provide.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, the challenge for schools is to create relevance. One way to create relevance is to personalize the educational journey, so each student feels they are learning what they need to know.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStudents need a personal connection to the material\u2026 Without that, students may not only disengage and quickly forget, but they may also lose the motivation to try,\u201d says Sara Bernard in <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/neuroscience-brain-based-learning-relevance-improves-engagement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edutopia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An Individual Learning Plan can help students feel more connected to their studies. The <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncwd-youth.info\/solutions\/individualized-learning-plans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Collaborative on Workforce and Disability for Youth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NCWD\/Youth) defines an Individual Learning Plan as: \u201cboth a document and a process that students use \u2013 with support from school counselors, teachers, and parents \u2013 to define their career goals and postsecondary plans in order to inform their decisions about their courses and activities throughout high school.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prepare-ri.org\/ilp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prepare Rhode Island<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an Individual Learning Plan, \u201cis a student-directed planning and monitoring tool that\u2026 documents students\u2019 interests, needs, supports, course selections, transition placements and other learning experiences both in and out of school. This information produces a thoughtful program of study leading to proficiency for graduation and postsecondary experiences.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"bene\"><strong>Benefits of an Individual Learning Plan<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the benefits of an Individual Learning Plan or ILP?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For starters, an ILP can increase student interest and motivation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.renniecenter.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2017-01\/ILPs.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rennie Center for Education Research &amp; Policy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a non-profit Think Tank,\u00a0 \u201cwhen implemented effectively, ILPs have been shown to foster higher levels of student motivation to persist in school, a result of increased clarity regarding postsecondary options, goal-setting skills, and understanding of their own interests.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They cite other benefits of an ILP as well, such as increase in attendance, fewer disciplinary referrals, improved academic self-efficacy, a greater likelihood of students engaging in self-directed learning, and students being more thoughtful about post high school decisions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"impact\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>How to get the most benefit from an Individualized Learning Plan\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students tend to become more focused on their post high school future when they reach high school (11th and 12th grade).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, students would benefit from starting this process earlier in their educational careers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.renniecenter.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2017-01\/ILPs.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rennie Center for Education Research &amp; Policy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cresearch suggests that these outcomes are most prominent when students engage in career planning activities prior to entering high school, rather than during high school alone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, schools can and should begin the process much earlier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, \u201cILPs appear to be more effective when they are regularly reviewed and updated beginning in middle school and continuing through and beyond high school. In this way, ILP activities occur regularly throughout the academic year rather than just once per year,\u201d as stated by <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncwd-youth.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/FactSheet-ILP.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Collaborative on Workforce and Disability for Youth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, it is recommended that ILP\u2019s are regularly revisited with <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prepare-ri.org\/ilp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prepare Rhode Island <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suggesting \u201ctwice each school year, and at key transition periods for students.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And what should an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) include?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/careerdevelopmentlab\/2020\/01\/17\/project-the-national-collaborative-on-workforce-and-disability-for-youth-ncwd-youth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Collaborative on Workforce and Disability for Youth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a quality Individual Learning Plan offers students opportunities \u201cto engage in three phases of skill development: self-exploration, career exploration, and career planning and management.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xello<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has age appropriate material for students as early as kindergarten. In elementary school, students can begin developing a solid foundation for future success by formulating the building blocks of meaningful life and career development, setting them up for smoother transitions in school and life. The lessons encourage self-directed learning, create career awareness, and build future readiness skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"verse\"><strong>Individual Learning Plan vs. Individual Education Plan<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The education field uses many acronyms which can become confusing. To clarify, an Individualized Education Plan or IEP is different from an Individual Learning Plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every student who gets special education services must have an IEP. An IEP as defined by the <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.parentcenterhub.org\/iep-overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center for Parents Information &amp; Resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as, \u201ca written statement of the educational program designed to meet a child\u2019s individual needs.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students can be involved in developing their own IEPs but it is not a requirement and is dependent upon capability, age, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students may have both an IEP and an ILP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While both the ILP and IEP are living documents that are regularly updated, there are important differences. An ILP is for all students, and they play a key role in its development. In addition, the focus of an Individual Learning Plan is preparing students for post high school success.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Final thoughts and considerations<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expecting a student, particularly those in the younger grades, to know exactly what they want is not realistic. However, as students age, they begin to develop distinct preferences, skills, strengths, and interests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recognizing that those elements may be most appropriate for particular professional areas can be inspiring and pique a student\u2019s interest as they can clearly see relevancy. Sure, they may very well change as they age but as long as they are working towards a goal and planning for the future, there\u2019s a greater chance they\u2019ll be inspired and put in their best efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An Individual Learning Plan helps students see beyond the walls of the classroom and imagine themselves in the future.
