We want them to discover their interests, develop skills, set goals, and eventually achieve their dreams. We think every parent and educator would agree that our kids should feel qualified and confident when they enter the workforce.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But let\u2019s address the elephant in the room: there\u2019s a stigma around certain career pathways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It hasn\u2019t always been this way. According to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/education.stateuniversity.com\/pages\/2044\/Higher-Education-in-United-States.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Higher Education in the United States<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, college wasn\u2019t seen as a necessity to further one\u2019s career or meet professional aspirations until the Cold War. It was then that the government placed math, science, and really any other profession that advanced the United States on a pedestal. Fast forward to today, where American society embraces \u201chigher education as a means to legitimacy, literacy, and respectability.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we want to truly support our students, we need to stop perpetuating the stigma surrounding vocational programs and lesser-followed career pathways, and instead encourage future generations to follow their passions. Integrating social services within career pathways frameworks can further support students by aligning social and human services with workforce development initiatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We teamed up with Abby Flaherty, an intervention specialist from Cincinnati, Ohio who has experience working in both traditional and vocational settings, to walk us through the process of helping students determine their pathway and feel confident in taking the next steps.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"what\"><b>Getting Started: What Are Career Pathways?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All jobs can be divided into six different Career Paths:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arts &amp; Communication<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business Management &amp; Technology<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Industrial &amp; Engineering Technology<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health Services<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human Services<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural Resources Agriculture\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Career Clusters<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within these paths are broad groups of occupations and industries, known as Career Clusters. The U.S. Department of Education has divided careers into the following<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.careerkey.org\/fit\/clusters-pathways\/16-career-clusters\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 16 clusters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agriculture, Food &amp; Natural Resources<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Architecture &amp; Construction<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arts, Audio\/Video Technology &amp; Communications<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business, Management &amp; Administration<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Education &amp; Training<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Government &amp; Public Administration<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health Science<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hospitality &amp; Tourism<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human Services<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Information Technology<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Law, Public Safety, Corrections &amp; Security<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manufacturing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marketing, Sales &amp; Service<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Science, Technology, Engineering &amp; Mathematics<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transportation, Distribution &amp; Logistics<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Career Pathways<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Career Clusters are divided even further into roughly 80 Career Pathways. These pathways are a series of courses that prepare students for an occupational field.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of that being said, what does this look like in real life? Here are two common ways Career Pathways can be determined:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Path -&gt; Cluster -&gt; Pathway:<\/strong> A student is interested in a hands-on profession, so she chooses the Industrial &amp; Engineering Technology Career Path. After looking at the different clusters in that path, she chooses the Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics cluster. From there, she chooses one of the seven different pathways.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Pathway -&gt; Cluster -&gt; Path:\u00a0<\/strong> A student is interested in Environmental Management, but wonders what other jobs would be a good fit. He looks at the Career Cluster to see related jobs and identifies other Career Paths that also include management positions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As overwhelming as the possibilities may seem, students can narrow down their choices by reflecting on interests and utilizing future programming tools and assessments. College Vine blogger Sadhvi Mathur encourages families to regularly talk about life goals and ambitions to help kids start thinking about their future. She suggests asking these<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.collegevine.com\/6-questions-to-get-your-high-schooler-thinking-about-the-future\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> six questions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to assist students in identifying passions as well as guide parents through talking points and next steps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flaherty recommends that districts implement future planning in elementary school, as it not only allows students to explore a variety of options, but also helps mitigate certain pathway stigma from an early age. She states, \u201cThe earlier we start talking about all of the pathways, the more accepting people will start to become.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"path\"><b>Recognizing that Career Pathways Aren\u2019t One-Size-Fits-All<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In many communities, the decision to attend a four year college is assumed and even expected. However, the data shows that this route isn\u2019t for everyone:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/programs\/raceindicators\/indicator_red.asp\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">41% of enrolled students<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will earn a degree in four years<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the average graduate leaves school with over<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/education\/best-colleges\/paying-for-college\/articles\/see-how-student-loan-borrowing-has-risen-in-10-years#:~:text=College%20graduates%20from%20the%20class,in%20the%20amount%20students%20borrow.\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$30,000 in loans<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ngpf.org\/blog\/question-of-the-day\/qod-what-percent-of-college-graduates-end-up-working-in-the-field-of-their-major\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only 27% of graduates work in their studied field<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternatively, students that graduate from a two-year trade school owe<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.collegescholarships.org\/loans\/average-debt.htm#:~:text=Students%20graduating%20from%20a%202,transition%20directly%20into%20the%20workforce.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> $10,000 on average<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and transition directly into the workforce to earn income. Career &amp; Technical Education (CTE) classes and community colleges can therefore be a smart choice for students choosing a non-college pathway, for those wanting a lower-cost option, or for seniors who aren\u2019t quite sure what they want to study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flaherty has only seen beneficial outcomes for students who choose to attend career campuses: \u201cOnce they arrive and find something they love doing, the \u2018trade school stigma\u2019 that both students and parents have tends to disappear. A lot of people try college and it doesn\u2019t work out, or they struggle to find jobs that bring joy. If being an electrician makes you happy, I tell my students to learn those skills early so that they\u2019ll have the ability to work their way up if they choose.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The data backs up Flaherty\u2019s personal account. According to a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedlearning.org\/impact\/student-outcomes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> nine year study by SRI International<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, students participating in high-quality, certified pathways:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Were 2.1% less likely to drop out and were 3.1% more likely to graduate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improved in communication, collaboration and informational literacy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accumulated 8.9 more credits than their peers by the end of high school<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Were equally likely to fulfill requirements for California public four-year institutions and earned similar GPAs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Equal Access and Information for Non-traditional Pathways<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How often are students asked to research colleges? And how often are kids asked to do the same with non-traditional pathways and alternate certifications?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flaherty suggests that, just as students are conditioned to explore colleges, they should also be encouraged to research trade schools. The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nc3t.com\/part-2-10-tips-for-parents-to-get-your-child-ready-for-college-and-careers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> National Center for College &amp; Career Transitions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NC3T) also recommends researching all avenues (CTE programs, four-year colleges, community colleges, and technical colleges) to expand pathway options and steps. Like Flaherty, NC3T wants to empower high school students to vet different campuses and \u201creally think about the programs themselves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flaherty\u2019s place of employment offers tours for students to help them determine if their specific programming is truly the best fit. \u201cOnce kids arrive, see the resources, and realize how impactful it can be for students\u2013 physically, mentally, emotionally, and educationally\u2013 they tend to become more accepting of the different educational career paths.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like on a university tour, it\u2019s important for potential students to learn the academic expectations and opportunities at each site. Here are some<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.careerkey.org\/fit\/clusters-pathways\/career-clusters-and-career-pathways\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggested questions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to ask by Career Key, a resource for career guidance:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What courses are part of the career pathway?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which career pathways best prepare you for the occupations that match your interests?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does a cluster or pathway limit your ability to get a bachelor\u2019s degree later? To advance in your career? (For example, not taking advanced math and science classes in one pathway may hold a student back later if he or she decides to switch to another that requires them.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"work\"><b>Utilize Work-based Learning Opportunities<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Future planning can be incredibly stressful, and since most high schools emphasize traditional pathways, students choosing the Career and Technical Education (CTE) route can feel lost or misguided. It\u2019s important to connect these students with a support network focused on their academic and future success, as well as helping them access services and learn skills for employability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work-based learning opportunities provide a practical and hands-on approach to education, allowing students to gain real-world experience and develop essential skills. These opportunities can include internships, apprenticeships, job shadowing, and cooperative education programs. By participating in these activities, students can explore different career paths, understand the demands of the workplace, and make informed decisions about their future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By utilizing work-based learning opportunities, schools can provide a comprehensive and supportive environment for CTE students, helping them to navigate their academic and career journeys with confidence and clarity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Academic Support for Inclusivity<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students with physical or learning disabilities shouldn\u2019t rule out alternative pathways; many work study programs and apprenticeships at trade schools pride themselves in empowering all students to succeed. CTE high school programs have the same supports (if not more) to provide guidance and meet student accommodations; these services can look like school counselors, intervention specialists, English Language Learner teachers, peer tutors, and certified instructors and specialists.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, it is Flaherty\u2019s experience that many of her high school students actually feel more supported and welcomed in pathway classes: \u201cOne of the things I love about working at a vocational school is seeing how happy students are when they finally feel like they belong\u2014 in their classes, with their friends, in a field they enjoy. A lot of my students thrive because they feel like they finally have a purpose and feel like they are doing something empowering.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Opportunities for Growth with Outside Connections\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students\u2019 post-secondary success isn\u2019t the result of just one educator. In fact, it takes the efforts of<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> many stakeholders<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help students develop interests, choose classes, determine appropriate pathways, and eventually find careers in the real world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nc3t.com\/part-2-10-tips-for-parents-to-get-your-child-ready-for-college-and-careers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NC3T<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends students improve their employability skills by taking career exploration courses, working at a part-time job, and signing up for job shadows and worksite tours. By expanding their conversational bubble, students will hear new perspectives, discover new interests, and find more opportunities of growth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"cte\"><b>CTE and Guidance Counseling<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">School counselors can help guide students and families considering a career or certification route. Assistance can look like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scheduling classes that align with goals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reviewing expectations for selected pathways<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Providing suggested tutor lists<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helping with the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en\/blog\/financial-aid-fafsa\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FAFSA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and scholarship process<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organizing application deadlines<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recommending different<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ams.org\/opportunities\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">summer learning programs<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finding additional<\/span>career exploration resources<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suggesting work or volunteer opportunities\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"final\"><b>Final Thoughts About Career Pathways<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If set upon a career that requires college, high school seniors can access the many<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en\/blog\/college-planning-checklist\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> checklists available<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> online to ensure that they research options and meet deadlines required in the planning process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A growing number of students, though, are making plans to follow alternate career pathways, and it can be a struggle to find community support or guidance when not adhering to the status-quo. Flaherty reflects on some of the stigma that is still present today: \u201cEven though \u2018self-care\u2019 became one of the most used terms these past years, we sadly still live in a society where success is more important than happiness.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is time for society to let go of the embraced notion that success means a four year college degree.
