As a society, we put so much pressure on the college decision (and sometimes forget that there are<\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en\/blog\/career-exploration\/career-pathways-future-planning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other pathways<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> besides a four-year degree). We act as if kids must find the perfect fit to ensure all of their academic needs and extracurricular interests are met.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This all-or-nothing mindset, paired with the application process itself, makes the whole \u201cgrowing up thing\u201d quite daunting for a seventeen year old. Families and educators try to help by prompting students to complete their<\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en\/blog\/product-news\/application-common-app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common App<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/help.xello.world\/en-us\/Content\/Knowledge-Base\/Xello-6-12\/College-Planning\/KB_6-12_LoR.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">request recommendation letters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, apply for<\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en\/blog\/career-exploration\/partnering-with-local-employers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">local internships<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and write application essays. These reminders, of course, are important; we want students to meet deadlines and choose majors specific to their passions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, if we really want future generations to be successful, we should instead ask about where they see themselves <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> those college years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whenever I asked my own students how they pictured their life in ten years, none of their answers involve crippling debt. Be a resource for students and families\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applying for college, and then deciding on which to attend, can be incredibly stressful for students and families alike. There are two ways counselors can proactively help minimize these feelings: by providing college guidance and offering coping strategies for big emotions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Communicate regularly about college planning and financial aid\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since most districts now prioritize<\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en\/college-and-career-readiness-report-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">future readiness programming<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, students often know their preferred career clusters by<\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en\/blog\/college-planning\/how-counselors-can-help-juniors-prepare-and-plan-for-college-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">junior<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or senior year. That means that a main hang-up isn\u2019t deciding on a major, but instead where to even start in the<\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en\/blog\/college-planning\/college-planning-timeline-for-seniors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">application process<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luckily, there are many comprehensive guides out there for students, families, and counselors alike. U.S. News publishes an <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/education\/best-colleges\/articles\/college-application-process\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">easy-to-follow handbook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help readers understand the steps and timelines for applications and financial aid.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thebestschools.org\/resources\/applying-to-college\/how-to-apply-for-college\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Best Schools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a website that provides in-depth rankings of programs and universities, not only offers steps for applying to college, but also suggests questions and activities to help students prioritize deciding factors when selecting a school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a counselor, it\u2019s critical that you communicate often and through a variety of mediums to ensure all students feel supported and knowledgeable about college planning and financial aid. Consider implementing the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Holding grade-level meetings.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Scheduling grade-level assemblies is an efficient way to ensure all students receive the same information. Just make sure you have a plan for absent students, such as hosting a follow-up meeting or sending home a handout with the highlights.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Adding information to the daily announcements.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Daily announcements is another Tier I method of sending out information to the whole study body. If you use this method, make sure the announcements are read or published for at least a week.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Meeting with small groups for additional support.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some students \u2013 such as those applying to ROTC or <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en\/blog\/college-planning\/apply-to-highly-selective-colleges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highly selective colleges<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 may need additional support. It\u2019s best practice to not only identify your own groups, but also promote voluntary sign-ups for those interested.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Utilizing online learning platforms.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Distribute information via online learning platforms, such as Schoology, Google Classrooms, and Blackboard, to announce financial aid deadlines and local scholarship opportunities.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hosting one-on-one meetings. Meet one-on-one with students to discuss goals and walk through vital application steps, such as requesting recommendation letters and <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en\/blog\/product-news\/college-application-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">track important deliverables<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Counselors also have the responsibility of communicating these expectations with families. By hosting virtual coffee chats and evening Q&amp;As, as well as sending out informational newsletters, educators can help distribute resources surrounding college and financial aid applications. This onboarding of families is incredibly important, as it creates a web of support for students navigating through an exciting yet stressful time in their lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Assist students combat anxiety with coping strategies\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chop.edu\/news\/health-tip\/college-application-stress-what-parents-and-teens-should-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Application stress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a real thing; it\u2019s hard for seniors to manage future planning, regular school work, sports, extracurriculars, and a social life at the same time. Therefore, it\u2019s imperative that you warn students about these potential feelings and provide them with a list<\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cmich.edu\/blog\/all-things-higher-ed\/15-ways-to-manage-stress-during-the-application-process\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of suggestions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help them combat this specific anxiety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, counselors should equip families with ways to help their teen<\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/hside.org\/college-application-anxiety\/#:~:text=To%20make%20the%20college%20application,getting%20into%20a%20selective%20school.&amp;text=This%20statistic%20makes%20it%20easy,a%20school%20by%20a%20deadline.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">navigate the pressures of college applications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. By using evidence-based strategies at home, parents can help their child develop appropriate coping strategies that improve self-regulation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 ID=aid><strong>2. Make sure students understand financial aid\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial aid is funded by various sources, such as federal and state agencies, colleges, high schools, foundations, and corporations. In order to be granted financial aid, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (<\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/h\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FAFSA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) by answering a series of questions regarding family makeup and finances. States and colleges also use this data to award eligibility for their own financial assistance. Once the aid is offered, students have the ability to accept or deny the offer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below are the various types of financial aid students can apply for and receive. It\u2019s essential for students and families to know the difference, especially between financial aid that is gifted and aid that must be paid back with interest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Federal student loans<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Federal Student Loans are fixed-rate loans from the government and are the main source of granted financial aid. It is important to stress to students and families that before a loan is accepted, they must<\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/understand-aid\/types\/loans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">understand all of the conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and their own responsibilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Federal grants<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/understand-aid\/types\/grants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Federal grants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are good options to share with families who may believe money is standing in the way of their child receiving higher education. Most grants are only given to students in financial need, such as the<\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/understand-aid\/types\/grants\/pell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pell Grant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is awarded to students whose families earn an average of $25,000 or less per year. Note that while most students don\u2019t have to repay federal grants, there are extenuating circumstances, such as if their enrollment status changed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>CSS profiles<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over 400 schools and organizations use the College Board\u2019s own application,<\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/cssprofile.collegeboard.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CSS Profile<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to award non-government financial aid. Seniors can submit their application starting on October 1 and must pay a $25 fee (although College Board offers<\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/cssprofile.collegeboard.org\/fee-waivers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fee waivers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Encourage students to research if their<\/span> preferred schools accept<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the CSS Profile and the deadlines for each.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Merit aid<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institutions, colleges, and private organizations can award<\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.road2college.com\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-merit-scholarships\/#:~:text=About%2026%25%20of%20college%20aid,aid%20offered%20through%20private%20sources.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">merit aid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to students for specific talents or abilities. Some schools automatically offer merit scholarships based on test scores and grades, while others don\u2019t grant it at all. According to a survey by <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/education\/best-colleges\/the-short-list-college\/articles\/colleges-that-give-merit-aid-to-the-most-students#:~:text=The%20average%20percentage%20of%20students,News%20in%20an%20annual%20survey.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, only 15% of full-time students are awarded merit aid. Therefore, students should not rely on paying for college solely using this financial aid option.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Peace Corps &amp; ROTC<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students involved in specific groups, such as the Peace Corps or the Reserve Officers\u2019 Training Corps program (ROTC) may receive additional funds to help pay for college. This financial aid, for example, may include a scholarship that covers either tuition, fees and books, or room and board.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Work study<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work study programs provide part-time work, typically related to the student\u2019s coursework, to help cover college-related expenses. Students will earn at least minimum wage and work the number of hours allotted in their financial aid letter. Help students meet financial aid deadlines<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students must meet the set deadlines to receive financial aid. Sharing<\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\/fafsa-deadlines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">these dates<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">often and through numerous platforms will help students plan and prioritize. Not only do they need to consider national cutoffs, they should also review their state\u2019s specific deadlines to be eligible for any grants or scholarships. In fact, it is recommended that students submit their FAFSA as soon as they can, since money is granted on a<\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/education\/blogs\/student-loan-ranger\/articles\/2017-09-20\/file-fafsa-early-to-minimize-borrowing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first-come-first-serve basis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 ID=cost><strong>4. Ensure students are being realistic about college costs<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For students who aren\u2019t used to budgeting money, monitoring accounts, and paying bills, most numbers on the screen look just like that\u2013 numbers. To understand the scope and sequence of paying for college, educators and families must equip students with information and tools to help them make the best decision for their academic and financial situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Encourage students to research community colleges and apprenticeships<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community colleges are an incredibly smart choice for students wanting to further their education at a lower cost and stay closer to home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The former Biden-Harris administration was a huge advocate of community colleges and apprentice programs. In December 2023 the administration announced <\/span>$44.5M in grants<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to improve rates of postsecondary enrollment in rural communities. Additionally, <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/education\/jill-biden-community-college-free-access-20210209.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Former First Lady Jill Biden<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emphasized the need for free access to community college and training programs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Counselors can help promote the community college and apprenticeship options by:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inviting admissions officers and local businesses for college and career fairs (instead of just admissions officers from select colleges).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Providing more information about <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en\/blog\/resources\/ebooks\/evolution-of-opportunity-dynamic-careers-in-the-trades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">careers in trades<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communicating the differences between <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en\/blog\/college-planning\/course-selection-how-to-stand-out-academically-in-high-school-webinar-recap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">graduation and college application requirements<\/a> so students can choose the courses best for them.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>Alleviate confusion by sharing budgeting tools<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An important mindset to adopt during budget analysis is that financial aid is actually a<\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/h\/understand-aid\/how-aid-works\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> five step process<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of acquiring and eventually paying off college loans. Financial aid letters are notoriously hard to decipher, but with<\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/education\/best-colleges\/paying-for-college\/articles\/2019-04-03\/when-to-expect-your-financial-aid-award-letter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a little guidance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, students and families can make decisions appropriate to their needs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One tool that counselors can share with students is this comprehensive<\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1fXMkZLoEAwTjPfxoZPbc3QEjjyfB5HJS8Dv2yccISgQ\/edit#gid=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial Aid Letter Comparison analyzer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This spreadsheet helps students identify costs, aid, and potential income. By seeing the numbers side-by-side, teens will develop a true sense of what their college choices will cost.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another beneficial tool is the federal government\u2019s<\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/loan-simulator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loan Simulator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which helps students create a payment plan that meets their needs. This tool can connect to a student\u2019s FAFSA information, giving them accurate predictions and guidance.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Empower students for college planning success<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alexander Graham Bell once advised that \u201cpreparation is the key to success.\u201d While counselors can\u2019t remove the stressful nature of college applications, they can help high school students prepare for the road ahead.
