Here\u2019s why (and how) you need to think about bringing career readiness into your classroom.<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you think of career readiness, it\u2019s hard to imagine looking into the cherubic face of a kindergartener and imagine them leading a meeting about third-quarter numbers.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or collaborating with colleagues to solve complex problems that can save lives on a global scale. Or tossing out the playbook and coming up with an entirely new game plan when their industry suddenly has to pivot.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But these\u2014and other impossible-to-predict workplace scenarios\u2014will be the reality for today\u2019s students as they grow into adults and enter an ever-changing workforce.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, employers are increasingly reporting that it\u2019s difficult to find career-ready candidates. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.cengage.com\/upskilling\/new-survey-demand-for-uniquely-human-skills-increases-even-as-technology-and-automation-replace-some-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 73 per cent of employers perceived that it was \u201cvery or somewhat difficult\u201d to find qualified candidates for jobs. And about 34 per cent reported that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.cengage.com\/upskilling\/new-survey-demand-for-uniquely-human-skills-increases-even-as-technology-and-automation-replace-some-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">schools have not properly prepared students for jobs.<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en\/blog\/career-exploration\/why-work-based-learning-works\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preparing students for the workforce<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> isn\u2019t something that educators have historically considered part of their role, but career readiness is a vital part of learning and skill-building. We owe it to our students (yes, even those kindergarteners!) to prepare them for their futures, beyond college.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acteonline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Xello_Delivering-Real-World-Publication.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b><i>Read ACTE Whitepaper: Delivering Real-World Experiences Through Work-Based Learning<\/i><\/b><\/a><\/h2>\n<h3><b>What\u00a0is Career Readiness?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Career readiness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> refers to the ability to find an appropriate job (in any industry, at any level), understand the responsibilities of that role, successfully report and relate to colleagues\/customers\/management\/stakeholders, and grow professionally within the role.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most districts and schools have <\/span>college and career readiness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> programs designed to prepare students to make educated decisions about their futures.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These might include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">technology tools like Xello<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which help students reflect on their passions and strengths, research careers that would be a good fit for their personality and skills, and access resources to develop a pathway to qualify for that career.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On its own, the \u201ccareer\u201d portion of the college and career readiness education often refers to building technical and\/or 21<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century skills that are required in modern workplaces.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While many districts associate career readiness with CTE programs, employers tend to have a broader perspective. Many report that current candidates aren\u2019t coming prepared with the soft skills that help them carry out multi-functional roles that are part of every workplace.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/learning.linkedin.com\/resources\/workplace-learning-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LinkedIn Learning 2020 Workplace Learning Report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mapped the most in-demand soft skills among more than 20 million jobs and found that creativity, persuasion, collaboration, adaptability, and emotional intelligence top the list.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Career readiness skills can also include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial literacy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Career development<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professionalism\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Critical thinking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teamwork\/collaboration<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leadership<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work ethic<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en\/blog\/career-exploration\/21st-century-skills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Career readiness skills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can begin to be developed at an early age and can be applied to roles like \u201csuccessful student\u201d, \u201cgrocery clerk\u201d, or \u201cfast-food employee.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skills like thinking critically, solving problems, and communicating clearly can be transferable to any number of tasks, from the exceptionally complex to the mundane. The earlier students learn them, the longer time they have to hone these skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Why is Career Readiness Important?\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a fiercely competitive and always-evolving job market, students need to be able to impress a potential employer and hit the ground running when they are hired.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to being able to perform the duties of the job, they need to be able to independently manage their role and their career, relate to their colleagues, solve problems, communicate clearly, and understand where they fit into the big picture of the organization.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These 21<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century skills are not part of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/emilyhe\/2020\/09\/22\/why-learning-is-the-future-of-work\/?sh=52c0a67c55ac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on-the-job learning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Employers expect their employees to come prepared to bring more than just their direct \u201chard\u201d skills that qualify them to do the work for which they\u2019re hired.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Career readiness refers to the ability to thrive, build, and grow on the job.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, youth seem to have fewer opportunities to learn on-the-job skills.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a Pew Research study, 15 to 21-year-olds are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/brandonbusteed\/2019\/03\/29\/why-arent-graduates-ready-for-work-theyre-the-least-working-generation-in-us-history\/?sh=645cd8235e58\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">much less likely to have a paid summer job<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or to have been employed in the last year compared to previous generations.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone who has ever scooped ice cream, sold shoes, or cleaned up trash for minimum wage at an early age can attest that they learned life skills that they carried with them to their future career.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If students aren\u2019t learning these valuable skills on the job, they need to attain them in the classroom.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>What Skills Do Students Need to Make Them Career-Ready?<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acteonline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Career_Readiness_Paper_COLOR.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Association for Career and Technical Education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ACTE), the three primary career readiness skills are:<\/span><br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Academic skills: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students need foundational academic knowledge, especially in math and English language arts, and they need to be able to apply it to situations they encounter in their workplace, i.e. nurses calculate and apply ratios and other factors to determine drug dosages.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong>Employability skills:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the skills employers often say are the most critical to workplace success in the 21<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century economy. They include: critical thinking, adaptability, problem solving, communication, collaboration and team work, creativity, and more. ACTE recommends that students be provided opportunities to gain these skills and learn to apply them to real-world life and work situations. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Technical skills:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the job-specific skills required to carry out the duties associated with the role. For example, a student who wants to pursue a career in the trades will ideally have taken CTE classes in high school that help them get more specific pathway-level skills. This could apply to more academic pathways as well, i.e. a student with dreams of becoming a doctor will narrow their high school education to primarily maths and sciences and related specialized courses available to them.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acteonline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Xello_Delivering-Real-World-Publication.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b><i>Read ACTE Whitepaper: Delivering Real-World Experiences Through Work-Based Learning<\/i><\/b><\/a><\/h2>\n<h3><b>How to Incorporate Career Readiness Activities into Your Curriculum<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even without a formal college and career readiness program, educators can bring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weareteachers.com\/9-awesome-classroom-activities-that-teach-job-readiness-skills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">career readiness activities<\/a> into their classrooms. Ideas include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Connecting with local employers: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create opportunities for students to learn from professionals in your community. Regular lunch and learn workshops, workplace tours, virtual Q&amp;As, and a career fair that invites professionals of all stripes to come and share what it\u2019s like to do their job are all meaningful ways for students to learn more about careers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Creating work-based learning opportunities: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the absence of a formal program, assign students to find a professional mentor and request a day of job shadowing. You may ask them to complete and present a \u201cday in the life of\u2026\u201d report so their peers can learn what it\u2019s like to do a number of jobs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Promoting higher-order thinking skills: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider abstract assignments that require students to think through tough moral questions in which there is no \u201cright\u201d or defined answer. <\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong>Assigning group work to encourage collaboration:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The more opportunities students have to cooperate, the better prepared they will be to do the same in the workplace. Bonus marks for putting together groups of students who wouldn\u2019t normally choose to work together. This is where problem-solving, communication, and self-advocacy skills are sharpened.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en\/blog\/career-exploration\/xello-for-elementary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Providing early exposure to careers<\/a>: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students as young as kindergarten can begin to observe and consider the world of work. Give them the same opportunities as older students to connect with community employers and professionals.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Making use of EdTech: <\/b>Tools like Xello have built-in, ready-made curriculum that contribute to career readiness skill building. <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en\/blog\/product-news\/virtual-learning-lessons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lessons for students from K-12<\/a> cover academic, employability, and technical abilities.
