Give Your Students a Say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student engagement is universally acknowledged as essential, leaving educators to focus on how to foster it authentically. There have been numerous studies that highlight the benefits of engagement in both <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9855184\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">traditional<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/files.eric.ed.gov\/fulltext\/EJ1179659.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">online <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">classrooms. Giving students a voice in their learning seems to be the most effective strategy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Zac Malamed noted in a<\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kqed.org\/mindshift\/38102\/how-can-students-have-more-say-in-school-decisions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> MindShift<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> article, \u201cStudents want to achieve in school. They want to find purpose in school. They want to discover their talents. Without students having a voice, we cannot collectively ensure that this will all happen for every student.\u201d Students want to be participants in the learning process, not just recipients.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What does this look like in a modern classroom?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today\u2019s students are not content to passively absorb information while a teacher lectures at the front of the classroom. Strategies that foster passivity are outdated and should be limited in today\u2019s classrooms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to prepare students for success in the modern world, schools must employ strategies that help students to develop critical thinking skills.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These skills offer real-world benefits beyond school and work. <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/why-do-smart-people-do-foolish-things\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientific American<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> describes critical thinking as \u201ca collection of cognitive skills that allow us to think rationally in a goal-orientated fashion and a disposition to use those skills when appropriate.\u201d They also note it \u201cpredicts a wide range of life events\u201d and studies \u201chave found that critical thinkers experience fewer bad things in life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students cannot develop critical thinking skills in classrooms that lack engagement. Educators must provide opportunities to cultivate these skills through actively involving students in their learning. Students should be participants in their learning and have opportunities to think about their goals and reflect on their past experiences. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en-ca\/resources\/ebooks\/incorporating-digital-personalized-learning-in-the-classroom\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5218 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/wp-content\/uploads\/Personalized-Learning-Guide-Ad_01.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"140\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/wp-content\/uploads\/Personalized-Learning-Guide-Ad_01.png 768w, https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/wp-content\/uploads\/Personalized-Learning-Guide-Ad_01-300x55.png 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 768px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 768\/140;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4><b>Building life experience through learning\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Russell Quaglia told MindShift, \u201cthat the student voice in education is \u2018the elephant in the room\u2019\u2014the missing piece to the puzzle of how to reform schools.\u201d Although Quaglia noted that school reform is the end goal, student engagement was an important part of reform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Education experts Arthur Chickering and Zelda Gamson reinforced this idea, <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/tophat.com\/blog\/active-learning-any-modality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stating<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cStudents do not learn much just by sitting in class listening to teachers, memorizing prepackaged assignments, and spitting out answers. They must talk about what they are learning, write about it, relate it to past experiences, and apply it to their daily lives. They must make what they learn part of themselves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, ensuring that students have a voice in the classroom is critical to motivation and engagement. This approach not only enhances their educational experience but also equips them with critical thinking skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Good student \/ teacher relationships<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just as employees are more motivated when their opinions are valued and respected by management, students are more engaged when their efforts and perspectives are appreciated by their teachers. A strong teacher-student relationship is the foundation for a successful learning environment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of developing this relationship and, ultimately motivating students, is giving students a voice. Doing so can create a more productive classroom with stronger relationships. It\u2019s important to note that empowering students doesn\u2019t diminish a teacher\u2019s authority. It rather shifts the educator role to more of a guide or facilitator.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><i>If teachers and students function as partners in the classroom, both sides are expected to contribute, and this creates an optimal learning environment for students.\u00a0<\/i><\/b><b><i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<h4><b>Motivating Students<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For educators, motivating students is one of the biggest challenges in a classroom. According to <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.future-ed.org\/reversing-the-decline-in-student-motivation\/#:~:text=Motivation%20is%20not%20only%20important,classes%20and%20on%20standardized%20tests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FutureEd<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cMotivation is \u2026 an important predictor of learning and achievement. Students who are more motivated to learn persist longer, produce higher quality effort, learn more deeply, and perform better in classes and on standardized tests.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, a<\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/services\/180029\/gallup-student-poll-2014-overall-report.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Gallup poll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that motivation declined as students moved into high school, with only 53% of students engaged and 19% actively disengaged. This highlights the need for a fresh approach.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>The solution? Give students a voice.\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When students believe their opinions matter, they take ownership of their learning. A classroom that values student input fosters deeper, more authentic engagement. Real-world topics and applications that resonate with students\u2019 interests and futures make lessons more relevant and meaningful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To create this environment, educators must ask their students about their concerns and interests. When students are empowered, motivation grows, learning thrives, and essential real-world skills develop.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Using project-based learning<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en\/blog\/student-engagement\/personalized-learning\/beyond-the-textbook-building-real-world-skills-with-project-based-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Project-based learning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (PBL) is a great way to involve students in their learning process, which in turn, increases their engagement. Through PBL, students can explore academic concepts and interdisciplinary skills to solve real-world problems. This not only is an engaging way to interact with concepts learned in class, it often directly connects students to projects they find important. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PBL will look differently in different classrooms, but it can:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enable students to take ownership over their learning, as they make decisions about their project based on the information they are gathering<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Address a real-world problem<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be a sustained inquiry into a problem<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide opportunities for peer reflection and instructor feedback<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Provide an opportunity to present their project to a public audience<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>In practice: A successful case study<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Linked Learning school in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) provides a <\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/dev.xello.world\/en\/blog\/career-exploration\/client-best-practices-driving-higher-student-engagement-with-xello-portfolios\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">great example<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of how educators can utilize PBL learning to provide a holistic approach to teaching. There are four components\u2013rigorous academics, career technical education, work-based learning, and comprehensive support services\u2013in a Linked Learning approach, and this school in Los Angeles used Xello to facilitate their approach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Board Certified teacher Alicia Reyes shares that when she started using Xello Portfolios, it not only eased her work, but she found that students were more engaged and excited about their work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reyes also shared that she was concerned about a particular student\u2019s level of engagement, but found that when questioned, the student was able to respond with specific information about careers and salaries. This is a great example of how Portfolios can be used to engage students who are typically disengaged.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Fostering independence and responsibility<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giving students a voice in their learning is a powerful way to boost engagement and create meaningful educational experiences. When students take an active role in their education, they develop critical thinking, motivation, and a sense of purpose that goes beyond the classroom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open communication and approaches like project-based learning create a collaborative environment where students feel heard, valued, and invested in their own success. They can use this module to capture their interests, skills, preferences, experiences, and achievements. It\u2019s a great way for students to reflect on where they are in comparison to where they want to be.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/help.xello.world\/en-us\/content\/Get-Started\/Educator\/Learning-Modules\/Explore-Options\/Introduction.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Explore Options<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feature equips students to discover, on their own, careers and the college and majors that will get them there.
